What this sheet is for
Use this sheet for revising at home. Personal items, including books and pens, mobile phones and anything in your pockets, must be stored in a locker. You can only take personal belongings into the test room if DVSA gave approval for them when you booked (GOV.UK: what to take).
The test
- 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes (GOV.UK: multiple-choice questions); pass mark 43 (GOV.UK: pass marks).
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips (GOV.UK: hazard perception), pass mark 44 out of 75. You must pass both parts; the pass certificate number lasts 2 years (GOV.UK: results).
- DriveQuiz does not include hazard perception practice. GOV.UK’s revision page lists the official practice materials.
Stopping distances
Typical stopping distances for a car on a dry road, from the diagram in rule 126: 20 mph 12 metres; 30 mph 23 metres; 40 mph 36 metres; 50 mph 53 metres; 60 mph 73 metres; 70 mph 96 metres. Thinking distance at 30 mph is 9 metres.
Leave at least a two-second gap on high-speed roads and in tunnels where visibility is reduced; at least double it on wet roads and up to ten times greater on icy roads (rule 126). Read the stopping distances guide.
National speed limits
- Cars and motorcycles: 30 mph in built-up areas (20 mph in Wales), 60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
- Cars towing caravans or trailers: 30 mph in built-up areas (20 mph in Wales), 50 mph on single carriageways, 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.

Signs
Circles give orders; triangles warn; rectangles inform. Red rings or circles tell you what you must not do. Blue circles generally give a mandatory instruction. STOP and GIVE WAY are exceptions to the shape rules so they stand out (Know your traffic signs).
Direction signs: blue panels for motorways, green for primary routes, white for local or non-primary routes, brown for routes to tourist attractions (The Highway Code: traffic signs).
Motorways
- Red flashing lights and a red X identify a closed lane; do not go on in that lane (rule 258).
- You must not exceed a speed limit shown in a red circle (rule 261).
- The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes must not be used if you are towing a trailer (rule 265).
Drink and phones
The alcohol limit in England and Wales is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath; in Scotland it is 22 microgrammes (rule 95).
Holding and using a phone or device that can send and receive data while driving: 6 penalty points and a £200 fine. You lose your licence if you passed your test in the last 2 years (Using your phone while driving: the law, GOV.UK).
