How to choose a permit test app
The short answer
There is no national permit test, so check that an app covers your state’s laws, not only signs. DriveQuiz covers what every state shares, plus Texas, and its questions are drafted with AI help from the MUTCD, NHTSA and Texas law. They are checked against those sources and not reviewed by a driving instructor or any state agency.

A buyer’s checklist
Choosing a permit test app is a purchase like any other. Read the details before you pay. These questions help you compare apps without rushing.
- Does it cover your state, or only general questions?
- Where do the questions come from? Do the answers explain the rule?
- Is the price one-time, or a subscription that renews? If it renews, find out how to cancel.
- Does it offer a pass guarantee? Read the conditions.
- Does it show ads?
- What does it do with your data?
- Does it say when it was last updated?
State laws, not only signs
There is no national permit test. Each state writes its own test from its driver handbook. Road signs follow the national MUTCD.
That means a good app covers your state’s laws, not only signs. Signs are shared, but the rest of the test is set by your state.
